Crush, Texas
I don't know why, but this article about Crush, TX and the train-wreck-as-public-spectacle fascinates me. I wonder what the modern day equivalent would be?

Want to write shorter, cleaner code? Have an unfortunate situation where you need to fit as much as you can in one expression? Prefer a quick dose of hacks to spending the rest of your life reading the docs? You've come to the right place.

IKEA: Flat-pack accounting
If you ever wondered why IKEA seems so charitable -- what, with the low-price breakfast, free childcare, allegedly great employee benefits and in some cases free room and board for traveling customers, it may be because IKEA is in fact a Dutch not-for-profit foundation dedicated to "innovation in the field of architectural and interior design". Fascinating read.

The Six-Lesson Schoolteacher
Interesting essay from 1991. I admit I've been out of the loop and can't speak for today's public education climate, but I can say this is an accurate depiction of my experience in high school -- and to a lesser extent, middle school. Unfortunately, most private schools are either religious or disciplinary in nature and the home-schooling movement is dominated by religious fundamentalists and paranoid schizophrenics. Choice quote:
"School" is an essential support system for a vision of social engineering that condemns most people to be subordinate stones in a pyramid that narrows to a control point as it ascends.
and bonus:
We cannot afford to save money, not even to help children.
