The Six-Lesson Schoolteacher
Interesting essay from 1991. I admit I've been out of the loop and can't speak for today's public education climate, but I can say this is an accurate depiction of my experience in high school -- and to a lesser extent, middle school. Unfortunately, most private schools are either religious or disciplinary in nature and the home-schooling movement is dominated by religious fundamentalists and paranoid schizophrenics. Choice quote:
"School" is an essential support system for a vision of social engineering that condemns most people to be subordinate stones in a pyramid that narrows to a control point as it ascends.
and bonus:
We cannot afford to save money, not even to help children.
